This is my first commissioned project, where I got to work closely with one of my mentors to create her first business cards after she became officially registered as an LCSW and LAC.
First, she sent me an image of a lion and the saying “Coram Deo” (Latin for “in the presence of God”). While studying the face of the lion, I noticed the nose resembled Christ on the cross. From there, I created a simple line drawing of the lion and incorporated the outline of a man on the cross within the nose. This subtle detail encapsulates my client and mentor’s godly passion in a meaningful way.
I later chose to remove the cross to allow the design to connect with a broader audience, as not all of her clients follow the same religion. The final form instead represents strength and victory over mental health struggles. After an initial review, she requested adding a heart and brush strokes, like an image she sent me, to make the design feel more hand-done and authentic. I incorporated these details into the ear and mane of the lion. From there, we worked closely on the colors and layout of her information on the back, resulting in the final design.
